Australian Immigration Physical

What Are Immigration Physicals For?

The purpose behind immigration physicals is to ensure that you’re mentally and physically fit for residency. During this physical, Dr. McElya evaluates the candidate for the following:

The presence of communicable diseases
Vaccination history
The existence or non-existence of mental disorder(s)
The presence of possible substance abuse disorders

Any disease that requires you to be quarantined or that poses a public health risk to others would make you inadmissible to Australia.

How Much Does This Cost?

For Australia Immigration, the cost of an adult (15 and up) physical is $500, plus the cost of vaccines, if needed.
The cost of an older child (11-14 years) physical is $285 and a younger child (5-10 years) physical is $200.
A newborn (0- 5 years) physical is $150, plus the cost of vaccines, if needed.

Is There a Physical Examination?

Yes, Dr. McElya does a full physical exam as outlined by the Australian embassy. This exam includes evaluating your:

Eyes, ears, nose, and throat
Extremities
Heart
Lungs
Abdomen
Lymph nodes
Skin

Dr. McElya also takes X-rays of any patient older than 11 years of age.

What Vaccines Do I Need?

Australia requires you to have proof of the following vaccines:

Diphtheria
The current year’s Influenza
Hepatitis A & B
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
Meningococcal
Pertussis
Pneumococcal
Polio
Rotavirus
Tetanus
Varicella

If you’re missing any of these vaccinations, Neighborhood Medical Center provides them at an additional cost. You may also visit your local health department.

Frequently Asked Questions About Immigration Physical

Does insurance cover this?: No. Insurance companies do not cover immigration physicals due to non-medical necessity, therefore, it cannot be submitted to your insurance company.

For Australian Immigration, the cost of an adult (15 and up) physical is $395, plus the cost of vaccines, if needed.

The cost of an older child (11-14 years) physical is $155 and a younger child (5-10 years) physical is $60.

A newborn (0- 4 years) physical is $50, plus the cost of vaccines, if needed.

Physicals for medical professionals $390 plus the cost of vaccines, if needed.
Do I need to bring any documents or physician letters indicating any and all prescribed medications or diagnosed medical conditions?: Yes. You need to bring documentation for every diagnosed medical condition and all prescribed medications that you may have, including but not limited to pregnancy, diabetes, cancer, thyroid conditions, etc.

For pregnancy, we need a document from your OB stating that you are pregnant and permission/no permission to receive an X ray (if necessary) and vaccinations (if necessary).
Is there blood work?: Yes, your blood will be tested for syphilis, tuberculosis gold, and gonorrhea. For medical field physicals, your blood will also be tested for HIV and hepatitis B & C.
Do I need to be fasting for my blood work?: No. Fasting is not required for lab work.
Do I need a passport?: Yes, you must bring a current, non-expired passport.
Is there a cancellation fee?: Yes. If you cancel your appointment within 24 hours of its scheduled time, you will be charged $50.
How long does an appointment last?: 1-2 hours per person.
Can I be on my menstrual cycle during my appointment?: No. If your appointment falls on date you are menstruating, you may either reschedule the appointment or schedule the urinalysis to be completed on a day when you are not menstruating.
How fast can I get my results?: The typical turn around time is 5-10 business days.
How early should I arrive?: We suggest that you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your appointment time in order to complete the immigration packet.
Do I need a translator?: If you are unable to read and write proficiently in English, you are required to bring a translator to your appointment to aid you in completing the immigration packet.
