Combat Migraines With Comprehensive Care
At Neighborhood Medical Center, we understand the impact that migraines can have on a person's life. Research shows that over 39 million Americans are affected by migraines, with women being three times more likely to suffer from them than men. We are dedicated to providing our patients with the care and treatment they need to manage their debilitating migraine symptoms.
What Are Migraines?
Migraines are a type of severe headache that can cause throbbing, pulsing pain, as well as nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. It is believed that certain triggers can cause headaches, such as:
- Stress
- Certain foods and drinks, such as caffeine, alcohol, and aged cheeses
- Hormonal changes, such as those related to menstruation or menopause
- Environmental factors, such as bright lights and strong smells
- Changes in sleep
- Medications
How Do We Treat Migraines?
The goal of our migraine treatment at Neighborhood Medical Center is to reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of migraine attacks. This can be done through a combination of lifestyle changes, medications, and stress reduction techniques. Some medications used to treat migraines include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), triptans, ergots, anti-nausea medications, and others. In more severe cases, Dr. McElya may recommend Botox injections.
If your migraine condition does not improve, Dr. McElya can provide you with a referral to a neurologist.
