A college physical is a comprehensive physical examination conducted prior to admission to a post-secondary institution. The physical will assess and evaluate the student's health and well-being to make sure they are mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared for the academic and social pressures of college life.
During the college physical, the student's vital signs are taken and they will be asked to complete a general physical exam and a mental health screening. The college physical is completed by Dr. McElya, who is knowledgeable of the necessary requirements set forth by most colleges.
During a college physical, Dr. McElya will conduct a series of tests and assessments to ensure that an individual is physically and mentally prepared for college life. These tests include a vision test, hearing test, urinalysis, blood testing to evaluate cholesterol and glucose levels, as well as a physical exam.
In addition, Dr. McElya will also conduct a mental health screening, during which he will ask questions related to the individual's mental health and history to help assess for any potential mental health related issues.
At Neighborhood Medical Center, we know that many colleges require that new students provide proof of vaccinations prior to the start of classes. The most common vaccinations required for college admission are Hepatitis B, measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). Many colleges also require proof of chickenpox vaccine, pneumonia, and meningitis vaccinations. In some cases, varicella and tetanus shots may also be required. If a student cannot provide proof of these vaccinations, the college may require the student to receive them prior to enrollment.
Dr. McElya understands the importance of these vaccinations and prioritizes students' health and safety. If you’re missing any of these vaccinations, we can provide them at the time of your psychical, at an additional cost.
