A fireman physical is a comprehensive medical examination conducted prior to firefighting duties. It is designed to ensure that a fireman is physically capable of safely performing the strenuous duties of their job.
The fireman physical includes a physical exam, a psychomotor skills exam, a respiratory assessment, and an eye exam to assess their ocular acuity. In general, firemen must undergo a fireman physical exam at least every two years in order to maintain their certification.

Additionally, Dr. McElya may also perform a heart or lung sound test, an electrocardiograph (EKG), a pulmonary function test, or an exercise stress test in order to check the individual's heart and lung health, as well as their overall physical fitness.
