What Is a Fireman Physical?

A fireman physical is a comprehensive medical examination conducted prior to firefighting duties. It is designed to ensure that a fireman is physically capable of safely performing the strenuous duties of their job.

The fireman physical includes a physical exam, a psychomotor skills exam, a respiratory assessment, and an eye exam to assess their ocular acuity. In general, firemen must undergo a fireman physical exam at least every two years in order to maintain their certification.

How Does a Fireman Physical Work?

During a fireman physical, Dr. McElya will conduct several tests to ensure an individual is physically able to safely and effectively perform firefighting duties. These tests include:

  • Physical exam
  • Psychomotor skills exam
  • Respiratory assessment
  • Eye exam to assess the ocular acuity

Additionally, Dr. McElya may also perform a heart or lung sound test, an electrocardiograph (EKG), a pulmonary function test, or an exercise stress test in order to check the individual's heart and lung health, as well as their overall physical fitness.
