Discover An Effective Weight Loss Plan That Works For You
At Neighborhood Medical Center, Dr. McElya offers weight loss programs designed to help you lose weight safely and permanently. Fad diets may work in the short term, but it’s usually only a matter of time before the weight starts to pile on again. Under Dr. McElya’s expert guidance, your weight loss approach takes into account many different angles to ensure your success.
What Is Considered Overweight?
In order to determine whether, and to what extent, you may be overweight, a good starter tool is the body mass index, or BMI. This number is calculated from your height and weight. Here’s how the BMI numbers break out:
- Under 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5-24.9: Healthy weight
- 25-29.9: Overweight
- Over 30: Obese
While these numbers don’t paint the whole picture because they don’t take bone structure and muscle mass into account, they’re a good place to start. Once you have an appointment with Dr. McElya, he can help you choose the right weight loss plan for you based on your weight, nutrition, and lifestyle habits.
What Are Health Complications Related To Obesity?
When it comes to weight issues, there’s no shortage of health complications that can be tied back to being overweight, chief among them:
- Diabetes
- Heart disease and strokes
- High blood pressure
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Certain cancers
- Sleep apnea
In some cases, weight issues have a direct causal relationship with these conditions and diseases, while sometimes extra pounds can exacerbate an existing problem. For example, high blood pressure is often a direct result of being overweight, while arthritis is made worse by the weight of extra pounds on the joints.
What Weight Loss Programs Do You Offer?
We start every weight loss plan by assessing the patient's current weight and body composition. Then we will take a history of your previous weight loss attempts and ask questions related to your eating habits, physical activity, and lifestyle. This will help your doctor determine which weight loss treatment will work best for you.
Wegovy® (Semaglutide) Injections
Semaglutide injections are a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that has been approved by theFDA for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It works by mimicking the effects of the naturally occurring hormones, insulin, and glucagon to help control blood sugar levels.
Wegovy® and Semaglutide injections have proven successful in increasing insulin production, reducing the risk for hypoglycemia, and decreasing risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, such as LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
Semaglutide is taken once a week, as an injection and one of its advantagesis that it is less expensive than other injectable medications and can be covered by some health insurance plans. Additionally, semaglutide injections are associated with reduced weight gain and improved levels of A1C (average level of blood sugar over a three-month period).
Mounjaro® (Tirzepatide) Injections
Mounjaro, which are tirzepatide injections, have a combination of two drugs, liraglutide and efegatide. These drugs work together to help control blood sugar levels by increasing the amount of insulin released by the body and decreasing the amount of glucose that is produced by the liver.
Tirzepatide injections are taken once a week and are more expensive than semaglutide injections. However, tirzepatide injections have been shown to be more effective at lowering A1C levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, making them a potentially more beneficial option for some patients.
Overall, Mounjaro® is a great option for those with type 2 diabetes, as it has been shown to increase insulin production, reduce the risk for hypoglycemia, and decrease risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, such as LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
Adipex-P (Phentermine)
Adipex-P, which is phentermine, is an appetite suppressant that you take orally once a day. This prescription medication is a stimulant that has been approved by the FDA for short-term weight loss. Adipex-P works by increasing your metabolism and suppressing your appetite. It is thought to work by triggering the brain to release neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine, which are known to suppress appetite and increase energy levels.
Adipex-P is a powerful medication that can be used to help with weight loss. It is important to remember that it is only intended for short-term use and should be used in combination with regular physical activity and a healthy diet for the best results.
This oral medication is recommended for those who are overweight or obese and have at least one weight-related medical condition, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.
B-12 Lipo Injections
B-12 lipo injections are commonly used to treat various forms of vitamin B-12 deficiency, as well as to boost energy levels and aid in weight loss. Vitamin B-12 is essential for red blood cell formation, the maintenance of a healthy nervous system, and DNA synthesis. It can also help boost metabolic function and energy levels, leading to enhanced performance during exercise.
B-12 lipo injections are a more recent development and are designed to bypass the digestive system and increase the body’s absorption of vitamin B-12. This delivery method is believed to be more effective than traditional B-12 injections, and can also be used to aid in weight loss. The injections are administered into the fatty layer of the skin, where the vitamin is slowly absorbed into the bloodstream.
This injection works best for people who have low energy levels, are trying to lose weight, or have a vitamin B-12 deficiency.
